Goulburn River Basin
Big River, Enoch Point
Fast flowing in heavily forested mountainous country, wadeable in
some areas, rock and gravel bed. Access via Enoch Point Road and
forestry tracks in dry weather. Although the catchment is logged,
siltation in the stream is not a problem in most places because of a
steep gradient. Catchment has been mined for gold for many years,
and stream was open for some years to eductor dredging. A popular
stream readily accessible in its lower reaches above
Lake Eildon.
The lower section was regularly stocked with brown trout up to 1992
to supplement stocks and meet angling pressure in this area. An
important trout nursery stream for the lake, with extensive brown
trout and rainbow trout spawning in the upper reaches. Contains
small rainbow trout average 200g, brown trout to 2.2 kg, abundant
small redfin in the lower reaches, also small river blackfish and
roach. The section of river immediately upstream of
Lake Eildon is
often fished successfully for brown trout, and can be reached by
land or by boat from the lake.
