Birch Creek, Clunes

Also called Bullarook Creek. Flows mainly through grazing land, gravel and mud bed. Access may be a problem. Low flow and water level in summer. Much of the riparian vegetation has been removed or replaced by exotics such as willows which choke the stream in places. Contains a self-supporting brown trout population, where habitat is suitable, with fish averaging 300g, maximum 1.2 kg and a few rainbow trout to 220g. Also redfin average 400g, maximum 600g, goldfish, tench and river blackfish, mostly small but up to 300g in the Smeaton area. Water was subject of brown trout fingerling stocking trial 1982-1984, at the suggestion of angler groups. Hatchery produced fish were found to have contributed very little to the brown trout fishery. The system is beginning to suffer from a lack of inflowing water. Future enhancement of the brown trout fishery will require habitat management.
