Broken River Basin

This is a relatively small basin with only one major river, the Broken, which flows north to meet the Goulburn River at Shepparton. Upstream from Benalla the Broken River and its tributaries are fast flowing, with adequate spawning facilities for trout. Brown trout are more common than rainbow trout and grow to a larger size. Downstream from Benalla, the Broken Creek branches off from the Broken River, and flows directly to the Murray River. The rivers flow through extensive flats and tend to be slow, with mud and sand bottoms. Trout are rare in this section. Some Murray cod, golden perch, carp and tench occur in the lower reaches with river blackfish less abundant but widespread. The best fishing for native fish in the Broken River is downstream from Benalla Lake and in the lake itself. Golden perch are plentiful in the lake and Murray cod are caught downstream of Benalla to Gowangardie Weir. The lower reaches of Broken Creek can provide good sized Murray cod.
