Broken River

Above Lake Nillabcootie

Flows through open grazing land, rock and gravel bed. Very low in summer. Carries abundant redfin average 150g, maximum 900g and occasional brown trout to 2.3 kg. Occasional reports of Macquarie perch being taken just above Lake Nillahcootie. Access is difficult due to private ownership of stream frontages.

Lake Nillabcootie to Benalla

Flows through open grazing country in a series of runs and deep pools, gravel beds. Below Swanpool the river becomes sluggish with a mud and sand bed. Very badly silted from its junction with the Moonee Moonee Creek to Benalla Lake. Contains brown trout
average 220g, maximum 800g, with carp and abundant small redfin maximum 450g further downstream, some golden perch above Swanpool, and some spiny freshwater crayfish. Public access only from the Swanpool and Samaria Road bridges. Elsewhere, permission must be obtained to cross private property. Last stocked with trout by Department in 1969. Stocked by the Department with Macquarie perch but the species has not yet become established.

Benalla to Shepparton

Sluggish with deep pools and runs, mud and sand bottom. Carries Murray cod, golden perch, redfin, carp and blackfish. An occasional Murray cod to 30 kg is caught. Stocked above Gowangardie Weir with golden perch by the Department. Weir is a good fishing access point with golden perch over 1 kg, redfin and carp.
