Campaspe River

Upstream from Kyneton

The river is small and shallow, and flows through grazing country. Carries a few small brown trout and rainbow trout.

Kyneton to Lake Eppalock

Flows through grazing land, sand and gravel bed. Poor trout water, with very turbid slow-flowing water. Contains brown trout and rainbow trout to 450g, small river blackfish, redfin to 650g, and tench to 600g. Most brown trout are taken around Kyneton, and rainbow trout from a small area near the Kyneton Falls. Last stocked with trout by the Department in 1980. Macquarie perch produced at Snobs Creek Hatchery are being released into this section in an attempt to restore this species to its former abundance.

Lake Eppalock to Elmore

Flows through hilly terrain to Barnadown, then through open grazing land. Access is mostly through private property, please ask permission. Contains redfin to 900g, occasional brown trout to 700g, small golden perch , goldfish to 720g, tench to 1.7 kg, and carp to 4.9 kg. Ferguson Bridge and English Bridge provide reasonable access. Trout stocking suspended after 1979, with the exception of a trial release of specially finclipped fish in 1990. Stocked by Department with golden perch (Elmore area) and Murray cod (Axedale-Elmore) as part of the program to restore and enhance native fish populations for both conservation and recreation. Murray cod population not yet established.

Weir at Elmore

Surrounded by open country, mud bottom, not marked on map. Boats are permitted. Contains redfin to 590g, goldfish to 600g, tench, carp to 4.8 kg, and reports of golden perch to 1 kg and better. Recently stocked with Murray cod and golden perch. Last stocked with trout by the department in 1981. One of the best fishing areas along the Campaspe River.

Elmore to Ecbuca

Water level fluctuates depending on the flow in the Waranga Western Channel. Redfin to 550g, carp to 5.2 kg in the pools, goldfish, tench, occasional trout usually small, golden perch to 1.4 kg, usually smaller, and a very occasional Murray cod. Native fish populations recruit from the Murray River and from downstream movements of fish stocked upstream.
