Campaspe River Basin
Coliban River, Kyneton
Upstream of Upper Coliban Reservoir
A small narrow stream, flowing through grazing country, gravel
bottom. Accessible through private property. Catchment is highly
modified and there is a low summer flow of turbid water. Limited
trout spawning occurs, and fish move upstream from
Upper Coliban
Reservoir. Carries brown trout to 700g, maximum to 2.2 kg during
April-June, river blackfish, and redfin to 550g. Lightly fished,
with good catches at times.
Between Upper Coliban Res. & Lauriston Res.
Carries small brown trout and redfin. Length of stream section
varies between 0.5-1.5 km, depending on the depth of
Lauriston
Reservoir.
Malmsbury Reservoir to Eppalock Reservoir
Flows through grazing land, sand bottom. Large numbers of brown
trout to 350g, small redfin, river blackfish, tench and goldfish.
Best fishing areas are just below
Malmsbury Reservoir and at the
base of any waterfall or small weir. Redesdale-Taradale section
stocked with Macquarie perch in 1988-90 in an attempt to
re-establish a species once abundant in the river before habitat
changes caused their decline and virtual disappearance. Stocking of
trout cod commenced in 1991. Last stocked with trout by the
Department in 1969.
