Dartmouth Lake, Dartmouth

  • Surface area: 6,400 ha
  • Capacity: 4,000,000 ML
  • Catchment area: 3,600 km2

A very large, deep, steep-sided water storage covering the confluence of the Dart and Mitta Mitta Rivers and extending some 40 km from the retaining wall to its furthest point up the Mitta Mitta River. Tallest earth and rockfill dam in the Southern Hemisphere (183 m). Set in steep forested country. Carries very good numbers of brown trout to 2.6 kg, rainbow trout to 1.5 kg, Macquarie perch average 900g, maximum 1.2 kg, carp, and some goldfish. There have been reports of redfin present, but not in numbers sufficient to provide reliable angling and a small number of trout cod may be present. Occasional Murray cod are reported, and carp up to 10 kg are being caught.

Stocked with rainbow trout by the Department 1979-81 when the storage was filling to generate an additional fishery. Trout stocking is no longer required as sufficient spawning occurs in the feeder streams. The condition of the brown trout has declined markedly since 1988, when the lake filled and stabilised. The large population of brown trout from natural breeding is now placing excessive demands on the available food supply. Rainbow trout and Macquarie perch seem less affected by these conditions.

Main access is via Dartmouth Township where there is a caravan park and most facilities. Boat access is via Dartmouth to Six Mile Creek where a steep ramp is located. Camping is permitted on the lake shore at two locations (Eight Mile Creek and Eustace Creek) where facilities are very limited. There is limited vehicle access to the top end of the lake via tracks but this requires local knowledge.
