East Gippsland Basin

This is a large area with numerous rivers flowing through heavily forested country. Access is difficult. Freshwater fishing is generally poor, with limited numbers of larger-sized angling species such as trout and Australian bass in only a few rivers. Most angling is done in the large estuaries. These carry a wide variety of fish, which can be caught throughout the year. There is little accommodation or camping facilities except along the highway and at Mallacoota and Sydenham Inlets. The most productive angling water is Mallacoota Inlet. Despite the presence of some natural populations of trout in several streams, the stocking of trout or any other fish not naturally occurring in this drainage basin is not permitted in public or private waters. The intention of the Department is to retain in as natural form as possible the native fish fauna of one of the only major relatively unspoilt areas of Victoria. The basin is a high fire risk area, and as many fishing locations are isolated with only one means of entry/exit, attention should be paid to warning signs, radio bulletins or signs of major fire outbreaks. The area is isolated and no unnecessary risks should be taken in attempts to reach some of the fishing locations. Fishing trips to some of the locations require a 4WD vehicle and reference to detailed topographical maps.
