An RWC irrigation storage on the
Campaspe River above Axedale,
surrounded by forest and open country, mud, sand and rock bottom.
Supplies irrigation water for the lower
Campaspe River, and domestic
water for Bendigo, Heathcote and other towns. A large popular
reservoir for water skiing, power boat racing and fishing. Large
fluctuations in water level. Good deep:shallow water ratio.
Relatively productive with fertilisers being washed in from
surrounding farmland. The warm summer water temperatures provide
ideal conditions for cyprinid fish (carp, goldfish, tench) and
redfin. Last stocked with trout by the Department in 1979.
Department commenced golden perch stocking in 1991. Murray cod may
be stocked when available in the
Campaspe River upstream of Metcalfe
Pool. Carries abundant redfin average 300g, maximum 2.2 kg, some
brown trout to 3.3 kg, tench to 3 kg, goldfish and occasional
rainbow trout, golden perch, carp to 4.5 kg. December to May best
period for redfin fishing. Some good trout fishing at the mouth of
the Wild Duck Creek April-June if creek is flowing adequately. No
longer stocked with trout as major releases over a number of years
produced very poor returns. Caravan parks, boat ramps and boat
storage facilities, kiosk, picnic facilities.
