Goulburn River Basin

This is a large basin with numerous waters ranging from fast flowing streams in the Great Dividing Range to large sluggish rivers in extensive river flats. The Goulburn River and its tributaries upstream from Seymour are predominantly trout waters, with brown trout more common and reaching a larger size than rainbow trout. Downstream from Seymour, redfin are the most abundant species, and native fish become more common with fair numbers of Murray cod caught at times. Redfin are abundant in all the large waters throughout the basin. Carp are present in the Goulburn River. Spiny freshwater crayfish are also widespread, being most abundant and reaching their largest size in Waranga Reservoir and Goulburn Weir (Nagambie Lake). The best trout waters are Eildon Pondage, the Howqua and Jamieson Rivers, the Goulburn River between Eildon and Seymour, and several of the arms of Eildon Lake (trolling from boats). The best redfin waters are Greens Lake, Loch Garry, Waranga Reservoir and Eildon Lake. The best waters for native fish are Goulburn Weir (Nagambie Lake), Waranga Reservoir and the lower Goulburn River below Toolamba. During spring to autumn the Goulburn River carries irrigation water releases from Eildon Lake to the RWC distribution system commencing at Goulburn Weir. Considerable fluctuations in flow and level occur, and some of the best fishing for trout during this period is to be found in the lower reaches of the tributary streams just above the influence of the colder, clearer water flowing down the Goulburn River. Most streams which are suitable for trout have self-supporting populations, although some supplemental stocking is carried out by the Department, and native fish stockings are now occurring in several waters.
