Goulburn Weir, Nagambie (including Nagambie Lake)

  • Surface area: 1,120 ha
  • Capacity: 25,000 MI

A shallow lake on the Goulbum River surrounded by open grazing land. An RWC regulatory storage, receiving water transferred down the Goulbum River from Lake Eildon and directing it to several major irrigation areas by means of channels. Constructed in 1890 as the first major attempt to regulate water for irrigation in northern Victoria. Contains redfin to 1.8 kg, some freshwater catfish, bony bream, tench, goldfish, a few Murray cod, brown trout, rainbow trout, river blackfish, golden perch. Abundant spiny freshwater crayfish. Gear, bag and size limits apply to spiny freshwater crayfish. Carp are now abundant in this water. Private and Departmental stockings of golden perch over a number of years have not achieved a great return to anglers, although many fish appear to have left the storage to grow and be caught in the two water distribution channels from the lake. Golden perch stocking is continuing as a lower priority with fewer fish. Bank fishing can be productive, but a boat provides better opportunities. Water temperature rarely exceeds 20Deg C during summer due to constant inflow of irrigation water. Recreation areas, toilets and boat launching facilities. Caravan park- at Chinamans Bridge. Subject to zoning for boat speeds and activities.
