Hindmarsh Lake, Jeparit

A very large (12,140 ha) shallow lake surrounded by scrub and cleared land. Can dry out at times. Contains redfin average 450 g, maximum 1. 8 kg, increasing numbers of golden perch to 3 kg (mainly from stocking of the species in the Wimmera River), freshwater catfish, tench, goldfish, many carp and good numbers of yabbies. Water is one of only three in Victoria where yabby pots (as distinct from hoop nets) permitted to be used (others - Lake Albacutya in same Basin, and Lake Wallawalla in Basin 14). The use of yabby pots for recreational fishing is under review. Lake is also open to the use of a six metre bait net by the holder of an Amateur Fishing Licence (or person otherwise exempt). Also open to amateur netting within the provisions and entitlements of an Amateur Netting Licence.

Note: The use of any mesh net in the lake within a radius of 600 metre from where the outlet leaves the lake, or within 1600 metres of the mouth of the Wimmera River is prohibited.
