Howqua River, Jamieson

Fast flowing, running through forested mountainous country to Lake Eildon, gravel bed. Vehicle access to 6 km above the lake and into the upper reaches via Merrijig. The upper section, in Crown land, is an excellent trout stream, but it deteriorates downstream where it flows through agricultural land above Lake Eildon. Silting of deep holes in lower reaches is a problem. Contains good numbers of brown and rainbow trout with the former slightly more abundant. Fish size ranges from 100g to 1.8 kg with most fish less than 350g. Small redfin in the lower reaches, some river blackfish, and large numbers of small roach. Occasional supplemental stocking by the Department of brown trout in the lower reaches.
