Jim Crow Creek, Newstead

Small stream flowing through grazing land, sand and gravel bed. Joins the Loddon River above Cairn Curran Reservoir. Private property upstream from the weir at Yandoit. Please ask permission. Fish stocks can be affected by low summer flow and water level. Contains numerous small brown trout average 80g, maximum 1. 4 kg, and some rainbow trout average 100g, maximum 700g, and redfin to 350g. Self-supporting trout population supplemented by trout migrating from Cairn Curran Reservoir via the Loddon River. Trout most abundant above the junction. Considered the best trout stream in the basin, but usually holds a large number of trout resulting in a poor growth rate and stunted fish. Nursery stream for Cairn Curran Reservoir. Fishery would benefit from cessation by anglers of voluntary limits on size, season and bag and removal of larger numbers of smaller fish from the existing population. Last stocked with trout in 1958.
