Kerford Lake, Beechworth

A shallow 24 ha lake surrounded by forest, Beechworth domestic water supply. Large fluctuations in water level. Boating and swimming are prohibited. Trout stockings produced little return to anglers and angling pressure was low. Stocked in 1987 to test if survival, growth and return to anglers of hatchery-produced brown trout was different to naturally-spawned brown trout transferred from the East Langford Aquaduct above Rocky Valley Storage. This trial, suggested by a State angler group, was unsuccessful for several reasons, including the difficulty of clearly identifying one-year-old fish from the wild stock source, and the wild stock being less advanced in size and condition than hatchery fish.
