Kiewa River

This basin carries one main river, the Kiewa River, which flows from the Bogong High Plains, northwards to the Murray River. Several water storages have been constructed on the upper reaches of the river, as part of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme. These storages contain mainly brown trout with rainbow trout occurring mainly in Rocky Valley Storage. Brown trout are abundant and larger than rainbow trout which usually reach only 450g with the largest fish being caught in the autumn. Trout populations in streams are self-sustaining, and there are ample spawning facilities. Native fish are very scarce. The land on both sides of the road between Mt. Beauty Township and Rocky Valley Storage is owned by the SECV. This includes the popular skiing resort at Falls Creek. There are no camping facilities and the road is unsuitable for caravans. The Kiewa River below Mount Beauty and Rocky Valley Storage provide the best angling for trout.
