King River

Near Cheshunt

Rises in mountainous forested country then flows through extensive tobacco fields and grazing land, gravel bed upstream of Moyhu, sand and mud downstream. Joins the Ovens River at Wangaratta.

Above Lake William Hovell

Catchment is basically unmodified. Brown trout are most abundant average 200g, maximum 1.2 kg, some rainbow trout to 420g, numerous small river blackfish, and a few small redfin. Occasional Macquarie perch as a result of Lake William Hovell being stocked with ex-brood fish from the Department's native fish production programs and translocation of fish from Lake Dartmouth.

Below Lake William Hovell

Length of stream suitable for trout has diminished greatly because of erosion, siltation, and water and gravel extraction. This has also affected the Murray cod population in the lower reaches. Downstream to Moyhu brown trout are abundant. average 400g, maximum 2. 4 kg, with river blackfish to 100g common, some redfin and carp, also very occasional Murray cod. Below Moyhu there are numerous redfin to 1. 2 kg and occasional Macquarie perch and Murray cod to 5 kg. Crickets and worms are good bait. Stocked regularly with brown trout by-Department between Lake William Hovell and Edi.
