Mitta Mitta River Basin
Hume Lake, Tallangatta
- Surface area: 22,600 ha
- Capacity: 3,059,000 MID
A large reservoir surrounded by cleared land. Contains mostly
redfin to 2.7 kg, brown trout to 4. 6 kg, carp and goldfish, a few
Macquarie perch and Murray cod, and increasing numbers of golden
perch to 5 kg, and plenty of carp. Most trout are caught from early
winter to late spring, during rising water.
The number of trout being caught in the warmer months appears to
be increasing, perhaps because of more suitable conditions resulting
from releases of colder water into the lake from
Lake Dartmouth via
the Mitta Mitta River. Bank fishing with worms and spinners, and
trolling from boats is highly successful. Trout stocking by the
Department resumed in 1988 as part of a joint Victorian-New South
Wales (NSW) fish stocking program. Victoria
stocks brown trout and Murray cod, and NSW stocks golden perch and
silver perch.
Notes: The southern bank of the Murray River, including the
original location of that bank beneath the impounded waters of Lake
Hume, is the State Boundary between Victoria and NSW. Waters south
of that boundary line are Victorian "Inland Waters", and in these
areas, there is a requirement for anglers to hold an Amateur Fishing
Licence. As a guide all waters south of the dam wall are Victorian,
and in the Murray Arm the border usually lies midway between the two
banks. There is no license required to fish in New South Wales
waters at this stage, but various fishing regulations, in addition
to those mentioned below, apply.
Of particular interest to those fishing within Victorian waters
is that the NSW minimum legal length of 25 cm for trout and no size
limit for Murray cod applies to all of
Lake Hume including Victorian
water except in the Mitta Mitta Arm of the lake upstream of the
Murray Valley Highway bridge east of Tallangatta. Above this bridge
a 40 cm size limit for Murray cod applies and there is no size limit
for trout. All other Victorian regulations apply to all of the
Victorian sector of Lake Hume. (Both Victoria and NSW are currently
proposing the introduction of a 50 cm minimum size limit for Murray
cod)
