Lonsdale Lake, Stawell

Surface area: 2,630 ha
Capacity: 65,500 Ml
Catchment area: 1,041 km2

Surrounded by forest and cleared land. Forms part of the RWC Wimmera-Mallee water supply system. Subject to fluctuations in water level. A shallow lake subject to high evaporation rates and water temperatures during summer, it is usually the first irrigation system storage to be drawn down. Camping facilities (unpowered) at the outlet. Boat launching on sand bar on the north-eastern side of the lake. Road runs close to the northern and western shores of the lake. Trout stocking prior to the 1967 drought produced very good results, but subsequent stocking in 1979 and 1981 combined with fluctuating water level produced very poor results. Trial resumption of trout stocking scheduled in 1990, was cancelled due to draw-down of lake to very low level. Trout spawn in the Mt William Creek which flows into Lake Lonsdale. Carries redfin to 1. 5 kg, occasional trout to 2. 2 kg. Tench and goldfish are also present.
