Maribyrnong River Basin

In this basin two main tributary streams Deep Creek and Jacksons Creek combine to form the Maribyrnong River which then flows through Melbourne and into the sea. The tributary streams are deeply entrenched in rolling grazing and agricultural country, as is the Maribyrnong River until it reaches the urban area. Access is generally confined to road crossings and some stream frontage sections. Most of the system above Keilor is surrounded by private land under old land titles which have ownership to the top of the bank or the stream centre. Most of the better sections of water run through private property, and prior permission to fish may be required. Water extraction and the construction of farm dams on numerous farmlets has decreased instream flow and the amount of habitat suitable for trout. Adequate self-sustaining trout populations exist where suitable habitat is available. There is a variety of fish with trout and eels being most abundant. Individual catches of trout are not large, but fish are usually of reasonable size and in fair condition.

I have caught good numbers of bream in the Maribyrnong River near the Avondale Heights section and also numerous eels. Although they have been good fun to catch do not know or game enough to eat as I am not sure of the water quality?
