Maribyrnong River Basin
Maribyrnong River, Bulla
Freshwater section
A large river, flowing for much of its length in a deep valley,
mud, sand, rock and boulder bottom. Accessible at several places,
but large stretches flow through private property, please ask
permission (Don't be upset if refused. Many landowners are refusing
access because of past actions of small numbers of people entering
property without permission). Catchment is highly modified, stream
flow and water level vary markedly from season to season and from
year to year. Some trout spawning occurs in the headwaters. Contains
brown trout to 600g, average 140g, numerous tench and eels, some
goldfish, roach and tupong, and occasionally grayling. The
downstream section of the river has a sluggish flow with discoloured
water, and in more severe summers virtually stops flowing. Trout
stocking by Department ceased after 1982, with the exception of a
trial release of brown trout in 1990 at Arundel Road Bridge, which
is one of the few public access points in this section of the river.
Estuarine section (Solomon Ford to
Yarra River)
River broadens into a wider, deeper stream with very good access
at many locations. Fish species present, and their abundance,
depends on time of year and water conditions, but includes carp to 7
kg, bream to 700g and possibly larger, mullet, tupong, occasional
mulloway and a variety of other estuarine fish.
