Mitta Mitta River Basin
Mitta Mitta River Basin
The main feature of the basin is the
Mitta Mitta River which
rises as numerous tributaries in the Great Dividing Range and flows
north to Lake Hume through extensive areas of rugged mountainous
country. Access is limited in many cases to 4WD vehicles or walking.
Trout populations are self-sustaining from natural spawning and are
able to meet angling pressure. Brown trout are abundant with good
numbers of fish. Rainbow trout are less common and apart from fish
in Lake Dartmouth are seldom larger than 350g with the best
conditioned fish being caught in the autumn. The best fishing is
from December to April, particularly at night. This is one of the
few basins in Victoria with viable populations of Macquarie perch.
Murray cod previously occurred in the
Mitta Mitta River but declined
rapidly with releases of cold water from
Lake Dartmouth and few
catches have been reported in the last four years. Many of the small
streams become low in summer and fishing is poor. The best trout
streams are the Cobungra and
Bundarra Rivers.
Lake Dartmouth
provides good fishing for brown trout, rainbow trout and Macquarie
perch, while Lake Hume provides excellent redfin fishing and more
recently improved trout fishing and some success for golden perch.
