MAP
Mitta Mitta River
Above Lake Dartmouth
Flows through mountainous forested country, rubble and gravel
bed. Vehicle access in the upper reaches is limited and in most
cases requires local knowledge. Contains brown trout average 350g,
maximum 2 kg, some rainbow trout to 700g, river blackfish to 100g
near the lake, carp, and occasional Macquarie perch.
Notes: Macquarie perch are subject to a bag limit of 10 fish per
person per day and a minimum legal length of 25 cm. Taking of
Macquarie perch from Lake Dartmouth and all its inflowing waters is
currently prohibited between 8 November and 23 January (both days
inclusive). Check for any change to this Regulation before fishing
the river.
A bag limit of five trout per day applies between 1 May and 31
August (both days inclusive) in
Lake Dartmouth and to specified
points of the Gibbo and Mitta Mitta Rivers. This restriction is
being reviewed.
Lake Dartmouth to Mitta Mitta Township
First 5 km of stream is contained within regulatory pondage which
provides water for an SECV hydroelectric power station. Fishing is
not prohibited, but can be risky due to rapid rise of water level
when power is being generated.
Below the Pondage the river flows through forested mountains and
cleared flats, rubble and sand bottom. Accessible by vehicle from
Mitta Mitta Dartmouth Road and from the old Dart Junction Track where
it can be reached from the new road. Brown trout average 150g,
maximum 1 kg, numerous river blackfish to 80g, redfin average 30g
maximum 200g, some rainbow trout to 250g, occasional Macquarie
perch, and carp.
Mitta Mitta to Lake Hume
Cleared river flats, sand, mud and rubble bed. Water level
fluctuates with releases from
Lake Dartmouth. High flows of cold
water appear to have improved fishing for trout. Contains mostly redfin average 225g, maximum 1.5 kg, brown trout average 450g
maximum 2.25 kg, particularly downstream of Mitta Mitta, carp, and
golden perch, particularly upstream of
Lake Hume. River blackfish to
70g in some localities.
Murray cod used to be abundant downstream of Eskdale but have
declined markedly in number, probably due to releases of cold water
from Lake Dartmouth.
