MAP
Mokoan Lake, Winton
- Surface area: 7,900 ha
- Capacity: 365,000 MI
A large shallow RWC storage surrounded by scattered forest and
grazing country. Created in 1971 by the enlargement of Winton Swamp.
A regulating storage that receives water from the
Broken River and
returns it as required for downstream irrigation and domestic water
demands. Water level fluctuates. Contains abundant carp to 3.5 kg,
average 1.6 kg, redfin to 1 kg, average 430g, goldfish to 340g,
golden perch to 1.4 kg, average 7309, river blackfish, an occasional
trout (probably originating from the
Broken River), and very
occasionally Murray cod. Boat fishing produces good results for redfin around the submerged trees, as does bank fishing close to the
shore during summer, although the quality of the redfin fishery has
declined in the last 3-4 years. Camping is prohibited but there is a
picnic area, boat ramp and toilet facilities on the mid-western
shore. Winds can create quite dangerous boating conditions and care
should be taken. Privately operated camping and caravan park on the
western side just north of the recreation reserve and boat ramp
area.
Department of Primary Industries stocking of both golden perch (since 1988) and
Murray cod (since 1989) is aimed at establishing recreational
fisheries for these species, with apparently quite good results
already from the golden perch stockings. Severe blue-green algae
blooms have occurred in this lake, the most severe being the first
in 1990. RWC usually closes the lake during these blooms to
activities involving contact with water as a precautionary measure.
