Mulwala Lake, Yarrawonga

  • Surface area: 4,590 ha
  • Capacity: 117,500 ML

Also called Yarrawonga Weir. A shallow lake surrounded by forest and grazing land. A regulating and diversion storage. Occasionally drained for maintenance works, but during the last drainage in 1988-89, a coffer dam was built to reduce the level of drainage required for future maintenance and major works programs. A popular boating and boat fishing lake containing mostly redfin to 2.2 kg, Murray cod, tench, goldfish, carp, golden perch and some river blackfish. Murray cod fishing is very good at times, but varies from year to year, and golden perch fishing is improving. Yabbies are the best bait for redfin. Certain areas of the lake are in New South Wales, where an inland angling license is not required. Victorian fishing regulations apply upstream of the Murray Valley Highway bridge over the Ovens River arm. Between this bridge and the State border all Victorian regulations apply except in the case of size limits for Murray cod and trout. At present in this area the size limit is 25 cm for trout and there is no size limit for Murray cod. Both Victoria and NSW are proposing a 50 cm limit for Murray cod.
