North Loddon River Basin

This is a windy low rainfall area, extensively affected by highly saline ground water. It is an old flood plain, with deeply entrenched streams, swampy depressions and landforms developed by wind erosion. The lakes, excavated by the prevailing south-west wind, are shallow in the southwest and deep in the north-eastern side. Most of the lakes are connected to or influenced by irrigation schemes. This results in low water levels from mid-May to mid-August when irrigation of farm land ceases. Fishing is poor during this period. This is the only basin in Victoria where most lakes are open to amateur and professional netting. If a water is open to netting this will be indicated in the description of that water. Fish are widespread through the basin and nearly all waters provide angling. Carp are abundant, also redfin, tench, goldfish and some native species. The best redfin fishing is from the end of January to May, when they are feeding on small carp. Recommended baits are yabbies and worms, and best lures are Bobbers, Hogback Spinners and Flopy's. The most productive lakes are Reedy, Charm and Kangaroo, and the best river is the Little Murray River, although the lower Loddon River in the Kerang area is improving, particularly for native fish. There is some confusion over the expression "Murray Water". "Murray Water" refers only to the water in the Murray River which is in New South Wales and under their jurisdiction. Water flowing out of the Murray River, into Victorian anabranches is not to be considered as "Murray Water
