Ovens River Basin

The rivers all flow north, from heavily forested mountain country through extensive river flats to the Murray River. Trout populations in most streams are self-sustaining and are able to meet angling pressure. Brown trout are widely distributed throughout the system and grow to a larger size than rainbow trout which are most abundant in the upper reaches. Small redfin are common in the lower reaches of the rivers with some Murray cod closer to the Murray River. Small river blackfish are common in many rivers, Macquarie perch are still occasionally caught, and catches of golden perch are being reported from the lower reaches, the result of stocking of the species into Lake Mulwala and the river below Wangaratta. The best trout streams are the Buffalo Buckland and King Rivers. The Ovens River below the Murray Valley Highway is the best area for redfin.

when l was a child the rivers around bright wher stocked by a dedicated team of fishermen who would catch and strip trout of there eggs and replace the fish caught with fingerlings they had dread in the off season. then a change of government in the seventies made a law that only the government would have the right to stock trout in these waters. the result is that these waters have not been stocked since the last volentere stockings of the seventies. the effort made to ridd the ovens river of trout was unsucsesful, but my children now fish in a trout farm for the sort of fishing l enjoyed in the river of the seventies and eighties. the drought has slowed the natural spawning ability of the fish, but it is beurocracy that has destroyed the fishing. l would prefer real river fishing for all kids and families. With a reason to visit this beautifull part of victoria and explore as we did the river and its beauty.
