Ovens River Basin
Ovens River
Around Wangaratta
Rises in forested country above Harrietville, then flows through
pine plantations and cropping and grazing land. Catchment as a whole
has been highly modified. The middle and lower sections have been
affected by man and the amount of suitable trout habitat has been
greatly reduced. Gravel bed upstream from Wangaratta with silt and
sand substrate downstream. Access generally good but can be
difficult in some areas with private property and agriculture to the
water's edge. Large volumes of water extracted annually for crops.
large quantities of gravel have also been extracted. Trial habitat
restoration project in and along the river just below its junction
with the Buckland River. A popular stream and heavily fished for
trout from Myrtleford upstream.
Upstream of Bright
Brown trout predominate, average 450g and reach 1.3 kg, with some
rainbow trout and small river blackfish.
Upstream of Myrtleford
