Rocky Valley Storage, Falls Creek

The main storage dam of the hydro-electric scheme, 265 ha. Located above the snow line in high plain snow grass country, freezes over in a severe winter. Accessible by a good unsealed road around the northern, eastern and south eastern sides, but virtually closed in winter when vehicles can only travel as far as Falls Creek ski village and the road across from the Omeo Highway is also closed.

Wide fluctuations in water level. Very little aquatic vegetation. Popular fishing water. Brown trout average 300g maximum 1 kg, occasional rainbow trout to 450g. Provides good angling at times. Brown trout population is more than adequately self-supporting from abundant breeding in adjoining streams and aquaducts. Biennial rainbow trout stockings 1979-1987 by the Department did not contribute usefully to the fishery. Trout stocking discontinued after 1987.
