Rubicon River, Thornton

A small river, flowing from mountainous forested country to open grazing land, gravel and mud bed. Access difficult above Rubicon with much of the area closed off due to it being part of the catchment area and water supply for SECV's Royston Hydroelectric Power Station. Consequent modification of flows to suit power generation. A popular angling stream. Nursery stream for the Goulburn River below Lake Eildon. Carries brown trout to 2. 5 kg although the average size taken by anglers is usually about 400g, some river blackfish redfin and rainbow trout. Stocked annually with a small number of 2YO brown trout and rainbow trout. The lower section above its junction with the Goulburn River holds many brown trout which are usually easily taken during the irrigation season when the Goulburn River is flowing cool, clear and high.
