Ryans Creek, Benalla

An excellent trout stream above Loombah and Mccall Say Weirs, but access is limited and fishing difficult because of overhanging vegetation. Spiny freshwater crayfish and brown trout occur throughout the stream. Loombah and Mccall Say Weirs are domestic water supplies, closed to fishing.

Above Loombah Weir

A fast flowing stream, in forested country, gravel and rock bed. Some siltation from forestry activities. Carries mainly small brown trout average 220g, occasional rainbow trout, river blackfish and trout cod. Accessible only on foot. Stocking of trout cod commenced in 1988 as part of the Department's program to establish another population of this endangered native fish. Results of this program appear to have been very successful with trout cod to 400g being recovered in 1990.

Downstream from Loombah Weir

Flows through open grazing country, slow runs and pools, mud and sand bed. Stream has been adversely modified by stock grazing and riparian vegetation removal, leading to many of the deeper holes silting up. Carries mainly brown trout average 500g, maximum 1. 2 kg with river blackfish to 120g, carp, redfin to 500g and goldfish. Biennial stocking by the Department of a small number of trout was suspended in 1989 and replaced by trout cod stocking.

Note: The taking of trout cod from Victorian Inland Waters is prohibited.
