South Loddon River Basin
The basin is mostly grazing and agricultural land, well-watered
in the south but becomes progressively drier towards the north.
There are indications that summer flows and water levels are
decreasing in some stream systems and this is affecting fish
populations. It is drained by the Loddon River, which rises in
rolling hill country in the south-east and flows northward to the
Murray River. There are three large reservoirs and many small
reservoirs less than 4 hectares; most providing good fishing.
Introduced fish predominate, with redfin and brown trout widespread
and usually together in the same water. The best fishing lakes are
Cairn Curran Reservoir for redfin and brown trout, Tullaroop
Reservoir, Hepburn Lagoon and Newlyn Reservoir for brown trout. The
best trout stream is Jim Crow Creek although an excessive number of
fish resulting from natural recruitment is causing a deterioration
in quality and size of trout.
