Toolondo Reservoir, Toolondo

Surface area: 1,444 ha
Capacity: 106,500 Ml

Also called Barton Swamp. Constructed in 1953 and forms part of the RWC's Wimmera-Mallee water supply system. Off-river storage filled from RocIdands Reservoir. Surrounded by forest and grazing land, mud and sand bottom. Extensive areas of private property around the lake but accessible at the northern end where there is a boat ramp and toilets. Camping facilities are available, including a privately operated park on the eastern shore. Contains redfin to 2.6 kg, average about 1 kg, brown trout to 3. 5 kg, average 1. 7 kg, rainbow trout to 2 kg, average 1. 4 kg, and tench to 3 kg. This lake has become very popular since the mid-1980's being a consistent producer of good numbers of trout in good condition. Stocking of equal numbers of brown trout and rainbow trout commenced in 1987, with the rainbow trout adding a short-term fishery for the species in spring-early summer each year. Stocking program amended for 1990/92 to mainly brown trout with a small number of rainbow trout. Some concern in 1990 that quality of brown trout was declining, with reduction in condition and average size of two and three-year-old brown trout. Can be fished from bank but boat fishing gives best results. Both redfin and trout fishing are very good most of the year in the stands of dead trees in the eastern and southern areas of the lake. Most fishing methods take fish, but mudeyes are probably the best bait.
