Wau Wauka Lake, Mallacoota
An extremely isolated 240 ha freshwater lake surrounded by
heavily forested country, Accessible by a 19 km walking track.
Contains eels, sea mullet, tupong and is reported to contain good
Australian bass.
Wingan Inlet, 26 km Sw of Mallacoota J 10 An 80 ha estuary
surrounded by forest and tea tree, mud and sand bottom. Permanently
open to the sea. Accessible by car along a road branching off the
Princes Highway 24 km east of Cann River. No caravans permitted. The
Inlet is a National Park, camping is permitted but there is no other
accommodation. It is wise to pre-book accommodation through the DCE
Office at Cann River. Only small boats can be transported to the
Inlet and there is no boat ramp. Very diverse fish population which
varies according to season and water conditions, but can contain
luderick, estuary perch, sea mullet, tailor, trevally, bream,
yellow-eye mullet, Australian salmon, flathead, long-finned eels,
whiting, tarwhine, occasional snapper.
Note: Wingan Inlet (but not the Wingan River) is excluded from
the definition of Victorian "Inland Waters". An Amateur Fishing
Licence is not required.
