Werribee River
Bacchus Marsh
Above Werribee Gorge
A very small river flowing through forest. Some trout spawning
occurs in the headwaters where the habitat is still suitable. A few
deep pools at Ballan contain small brown trout, redfin and river
blackfish. Last stocked with trout by Department in 1979 (Ballan).
Top of Werribee Gorge to diversion dam, 2 km upstream of Bacchus
Marsh
Flows through forest and grazing land, rock and gravel bottom.
Contains brown trout average 300g, maximum 800g, abundant redfin to
200g, river blackfish, eels, tench and roach. Last stocked with
trout by Department in 1978.
Diversion Dam to Melton Reservoir
Little more than a drain, containing small redfin and eels.
Melton Reservoir to Werribee
This 16 km section below the Reservoir is fairly productive.
Carries river blackfish, roach, redfin and some brown trout and eels
with the first kilometre being the most heavily fished. Last stocked
with trout by Department in 1967.
Werribee area
The pool above Cottrell Street Ford, the former swimming hole (Bungie's
Hole) and Pioneer Settlement Park contain redfin to 300g, eels, some
small river blackfish and some trout to 400g, average 120g.
Below Werribee
Freshwater section to ford behind Werribee is relatively
inaccessible. Stream below the ford is estuary water which carries
bream, mullet, trevally and flounder. Best access to the estuarine
section for shore-fishing is the lower western shore via the
Melbourne Water Farm. A permit to enter the farm and use certain
roads within defined hours is required. Some shoreline and jetty
fishing at Werribee South, and lower river section can be reached by
boat from Port Phillip Bay or the Werribee South boat ramp.
