William Hovell Reservoir, Cheshunt
- Surface area: 113 ha
- Capacity: 13,720 ML
A small, deep, steep-sided RWC storage on the
King River, subject
to wide fluctuations of water level. Water is used for irrigation in
the King and lower Ovens valleys. Storage has relatively few shallow
areas. Trout fishery is self-sustaining from the
King River above
the reservoir. Boating is allowed but motor usage is limited to 7. 5 kw (10 hp). Contains redfin to 2 kg, brown trout to 4 kg, some large
river blackfish, and some Macquarie perch. Macquarie perch brood
stock from the Department's native fish production program are
released into this lake, and fish have also been translocated from
Lake Dartmouth. The top end of the reservoir is the most productive
area for trout, particularly during winter when the storage is
refilling. Christmas beetles have been a consistently successful
bait for some years.
